Deloitte Survey Highlights Strategies for Retaining Talented Employees
January 31, 2012

By Kalen Smith, Big4.com Blogger
Deloitte recently highlighted several findings from its 2011 Best Companies to Work for Survey. These findings should provide insight for employers looking to retain their most talented workers.
Despite expectations from many analysts and economists, the high unemployment rate has not created a new supply of talented workers. Many open positions continue to go unfilled as companies struggle to find employees with the skill sets they are looking for.
Additionally, many employees continue to leave organizations they are not happy with, regardless of the state of the economy and hiring ability of the work force. Therefore, companies are looking into new ways to improve and maintain employee satisfaction.
Employees are forced to learn multiple skills and provide a number of different functions. As a result, they are becoming more valuable to their employers. Developing multiple skill sets allows them more flexibility to find employment with other organizations.
As other employers are reluctant to hire inexperienced employees, experienced and highly competent employees may have more flexibility in changing employers.
Employee satisfaction has declined significantly throughout many industries. According to Deloitte’s survey, almost two-thirds of all respondents stated that they were considering leaving their current employer. This is concerning to many organizations as they struggle to retain their top employees.
In order to maximize employee satisfaction, employers should make sure that employees are doing everything they can to compensate employees properly for the value they bring to the organization. Also, they should match employee skill sets to the mission of the company. This requires companies to provide their employees with an idea of what direction the organization is headed and what role they will play in its future.
